INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS

People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. Individual therapy, or psychotherapy, is a practice through which individuals can work one-on-one with a trained therapist in a safe, caring and confidential environment. The relationship between you and your therapist will help you explore your feelings, beliefs or behaviors to work through challenging childhood and family histories and memories and identify part of your life you’d like to change.

Family therapy may also be used to complement individual therapy when appropriate.  This can be particularly helpful when working through issues such as chronic illness and caregiving, parenting issues, and substance misuse.

COUPLES THERAPY

Couples therapy can be very helpful for partners to develop a deeper understanding of each other and the interpersonal dynamics of the relationship. The goal of couples therapy is to deepen your connection as a couple and repair and strengthen your relationship where needed. This can be a scary time for couples as they are often nervous about starting the process of working together despite the benefits they hope to achieve. Together we will create an environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable to share experiences and have tough conversations.

GROUP THERAPY AND SUPPORT GROUPS

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a group of individuals meet to describe and discuss their problems under the supervision of a therapist. The main goal of group therapy is to help people work on changing a part of their life that’s causing them major problems. The group members are trying to gain a better understanding about themselves by interacting with others and examining how they think and feel. If I think you may be appropriate for a therapy group, I will interview you before and see if you would be a good fit. For the group to work best, all interactions should stay within the group. Therapy groups can work particularly well in developing interpersonal skills and working on relationship issues.

In a support group, the main goal is to help people cope with an issue that they can’t change, like dealing with the death of a loved one or going through cancer treatments. While it will be facilitated, the strength of the support group is the peer support and mentorship. I may approach you to join one if it seems that you might benefit from one.
